Easter at the Hydrographic Office
For the 38th year running, three crosses were erected on the hill behind the office. The crosses were first erected in 1972, when the Hydrographer of the time, Rear Admiral Geoffrey Hall, agreed to a request from the Rural Deane of Taunton South to have the crosses placed on Creechbarrow Hill to mark this significant date in the Christian calendar.
Originally crosses were also established at Glastonbury Tor and on other high ground in the area. The crosses are floodlit from the night of the ceremony through to the night of Easter Monday and are clearly visible from cars and trains passing Taunton.
The Christian Fellowship is asked to act as hosts for visiting clergy and dignitaries on the day (we had 16 this year). It was a beautiful day and about 80 people (so 60+ of my colleagues) ascended the hill at lunch time to hear appropriate readings and a short address by the archdeacon. A
ll received a tract on the Easter story provided by the Christian Fellowship. For the first time this year, we sang a hymn: ‘When I survey the wondrous cross.’
It was great to see so many of our colleagues singing lustily! |
